SERMI

SERMI & the UK – What you need to know:

We know there’s a lot of concern and frustration around SERMI, so we want to set the record straight. This isn’t something OSCA is advocating or pushing - it’s a framework being implemented by manufacturers, and we’re simply here to help you understand what’s coming.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is SERMI mandatory in the UK?

Right now, SERMI is voluntary for manufacturers in the UK. However, if a manufacturer decides to enable it, it becomes mandatory for end users who need access to IMMO-related security functions. We’re already seeing its impact in Europe, where it’s live across most countries.

Will OSCA stop working if I don’t register?

No - OSCA will continue to function for all non-security-related operations. SERMI only affects IMMO security access, so unless you need that functionality, you won’t be impacted.

Why are we talking about this now?

While we don’t have an official UK launch date yet, industry bodies like the IGA and IAAF are indicating that it’s coming soon. Manufacturers must give 6 weeks to 3 months' notice before activation, but once they opt-in, compliance will be required.

Is this just another cost for businesses?

We get it - no one wants additional expenses. Right now, pre-registration is free, and we’ve been informed that when SERMI does go live, certification will cost £1,500 if pre-registered or £1,800 if registering later, valid for five years. By preparing now, businesses can avoid last-minute disruptions.

Will SERMI override existing manufacturer regulations (e.g., Ford or JLR)?

SERMI doesn’t necessarily replace existing manufacturer processes - it provides a standardised framework. Some manufacturers may integrate SERMI alongside their own systems, but ultimately, if they choose to implement it, compliance will be required to access their security functions.
