What's changed with SERMI in the last month?

It's hard to believe that SERMI has been live for over a month! In that time, we've made significant strides in helping businesses navigate security-related information. Here’s what you need to know about the recent changes and how they might impact your business.

SERMI registration and requirements

As you access security-related information, be aware that many manufacturers now require SERMI registration. This has raised concerns among many businesses regarding the registration process. A key point to note is that you do not need to be VAT-registered to complete this process. However, it is essential that you are a trading business and provide a valid Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number.

What is a UTR?

A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) that identifies individuals and businesses for tax purposes in the UK. It’s a vital component for filing Self-Assessment returns, registering as self-employed, or establishing a company, and is automatically assigned when you register for self-assessment.

How to find your UTR number?

If you need to find your UTR, here are several ways to do it:

HMRC documents:

Check for letters related to your Self-Assessment; your welcome letter or Personal Tax Account will usually contain your UTR.

HMRC App:

The official HMRC app on your smartphone can provide quick access to your UTR.

Previous Tax returns: It’s listed on any past self-assessment tax returns or statements.

Call HMRC:

If all else fails, call the HMRC helpline at 0300 200 3310 to retrieve your UTR.

Key fact: Your UTR is a 10-digit number, sometimes followed by the letter 'K'.

How to obtain a UTR?

If you don’t have a UTR, you can easily register online at GOV.UK for Self Assessment to obtain one.

Understanding different UTRs

It's worth mentioning that you may have multiple UTRs—one for your sole trader work and another for your limited company. These may also be referenced as "tax reference" or "official use" on various documents.

Supporting Small Businesses and Independents

The introduction of these requirements is designed to empower independents and small businesses that are not VAT-registered to become SERMI certified. This ensures they can access relevant security information and complete necessary tasks, ensuring that all businesses have the same opportunities and no one is locked out of security data.

Do you need SERMI?

If you're unsure whether you need SERMI for a specific job, our updated application list indicates which roles require SERMI certification. If you don’t see a job listed yet, it simply means we haven't processed that job with SERMI yet.
