DoIP has come to OSCA!

Blog/ DoIP has come to OSCA!
OSCA Release Day Blog Volvo

In recent months, the OSCA team has worked hard to enable DoIP over the OSCA Network. We are now completing the final tests and are soon ready to roll out DoIP to you.

What is Diagnostic over Internet Protocol (DoIP)?

DoIP has been introduced to support remote diagnostics better; the acronym stands for ‘Diagnostics over Internet Protocol’. This advancement in remote diagnostics sets the scene for the future to enable communication between an external tester and vehicle electronic control units, be it static or dynamic (stationary or on the move), giving real-time live data.

OSCA has been at the cutting edge of this technology for the last 6 years. And are now able to be able to offer this facility to our customers.

DoIP stands for Diagnostics over Internet Protocol and makes it possible to provide diagnostic services via the OBD port over IP (Internet Protocol) on the vehicle network.

As the name suggests, DoIP is the automotive diagnostics protocol based on IP. Defined by ISO 13400-2 standard, DoIP facilitates diagnostics related communication between external test equipment and automotive control units (ECU) using IP, TCP and UDP.

DoIP also supports communication between on-board and off-board diagnostic systems of a vehicle.

Because DoIP enables access to the electronic vehicle components through the Internet, it becomes possible to fetch diagnostic data from vehicles remotely without requiring physical access to the vehicle.

In simple terms, the DoIP stack serves as a gateway for all the next-generation Remote Vehicle Diagnostics applications!

Since the standard Ethernet Physical layer is used as a transmission medium for DoIP, it is also known as Diagnostics over Ethernet.

Following are some of the advantages of the Ethernet MAC layer of the DoIP stack solution:

  1. Ethernet is a low-cost technology that allows high bandwidth for data communication.
  2. It is a flexible communication platform and can be easily integrated into existing frameworks
  3. It is light weighted, simple shielded structured cable.

What does this mean for you?

Among other positives, it means that you will be performing jobs at a much higher bandwidth. Currently, 500 kbps is offered with CAN; however, with DoIP, you will be able to work with 1000 Mbps. This faster and more stable connection will ensure a speedier work time, with less downtime.

Not only will this service be faster, but you and other OSCA customers will see an introduction of vehicle makes and models that have not previously been offered.

Quick Summary

  1. new remote services possible for OSCA customers
  2. (re-)programming complex software
  3. faster coding

A Little More Info

Certain vehicles can only be accessed via DoIP, such as the latest models from Volvo, Mercedes and BMW. Now OSCA customers can also offer remote services for these vehicles.

Currently, many other existing diagnostic tools cannot handle DoIP; this will be another reason for workshops to choose OSCA technology.

The OSCA tools are already equipped with the necessary DoIP hardware. The software of the OSCA tool will receive several 'Over the Air' (OTA) firmware updates in the coming weeks. Depending on your internet connection speed, starting up the OSCA tool will sometimes take a little longer.

From Monday, March 7, 2022, the DoIP profiles will be made available, brand by brand, to all our customers, starting with Volvo.

If you have any questions, reach out to the team and we will be happy to help!
